How Prosper ISD calculates GPA and class rank
A plain-English guide for students and parents, based on Prosper ISD's 2026-27 High School Academic Course Guide and its class rank policy.
Unofficial guide. Rules can change each year. Always confirm with your school counselor and the official Prosper ISD sources linked at the bottom.
Weighted and unweighted GPA
- Weighted GPA decides class rank, the top 10%, and valedictorian and salutatorian. Harder courses earn more points. It's calculated from semester grades to three decimal places.
- Unweighted GPA decides honor graduates: Cum Laude 3.500–3.699, Magna Cum Laude 3.700–3.899 and Summa Cum Laude 3.900–4.000.
The three levels
- AP/Dual Credit (up to 6.0): AP courses, Collin College dual credit and Tarleton State dual enrollment.
- Honors (up to 5.5): Honors courses, most GT courses and some career & technical courses.
- On-Level (up to 5.0): all other courses, including PE, fine arts and most electives.
Points = the level's maximum minus 0.1 for every point below 100. A grade of 69 or below earns 0 points, and it still counts: Prosper ISD's policy includes failing grades.
| Semester grade | AP/Dual Credit | Honors | On-Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.0 |
| 97 | 5.7 | 5.2 | 4.7 |
| 95 | 5.5 | 5.0 | 4.5 |
| 90 | 5.0 | 4.5 | 4.0 |
| 85 | 4.5 | 4.0 | 3.5 |
| 80 | 4.0 | 3.5 | 3.0 |
| 70 | 3.0 | 2.5 | 2.0 |
| 69 and below | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Example: a 95 in an AP course (5.5) is worth the same as a 100 in an Honors course (5.5).
What counts: Classes of 2026 to 2030
Counts
- Semester grades in high school credit courses at any grade level, including courses taken in middle school.
- Dual credit taken in person during the fall or spring.
Doesn't count
- Summer school and anything else outside the regular school day or year, including summer dual credit.
- Online courses (including online dual credit), unless approved by the principal and proctored by a district employee.
- Correspondence courses, credit by exam, credit recovery, local credit courses, and off-campus private PE programs. These can still earn credit, and the grade goes on the transcript.
- A course retaken after you already passed it.
What counts: Class of 2031 and later
This year's 8th graders and younger follow a different rule. Class rank counts only these subject areas:
- English: 4 courses (8 semesters)
- Math: 4 courses (8 semesters)
- Science: 4 courses (8 semesters)
- Social studies: 5 courses (8 semesters)
- Languages other than English: 2 courses (4 semesters)
Credit by exam, online courses (including online dual credit), correspondence courses and district courses for original credit count, at the On-Level weight. Credit recovery, college courses that aren't dual credit, local credit and pass/fail courses don't count. Failing grades still count.
Ask your counselor: which courses count if you take more than the number listed in a subject (for example, five sciences).
When GPA and rank are calculated
- 9th to 11th graders: GPA and class rank are recalculated after each semester.
- Seniors: ranked at the end of each semester and after the third nine weeks, which decides graduation honors. The official senior GPA comes at the end of the fourth nine weeks.
- Students new to Prosper ISD are ranked after they complete one semester in the district.
Ask your counselor whether you can see your exact rank if you're outside the top 10%.
Valedictorian, salutatorian and the top ten
- The valedictorian and salutatorian have the highest and second-highest rank.
- They must be continuously enrolled in Prosper ISD for the two school years before graduation (four years starting with the Class of 2029), graduate after exactly eight semesters of high school, and complete the Foundation program with at least one endorsement.
- Ties to the third decimal place share the title.
- Prosper ISD also recognizes the ten highest-ranking graduates who earn the Distinguished Level of Achievement.
The top 10% and automatic admission
Texas students in the top 10% of their class who earn the Distinguished Level of Achievement (which Prosper ISD students take by default) can get automatic admission to most Texas public universities if they apply on time and enroll within two years. According to Prosper ISD's guide, UT Austin admits only the top 5% automatically for 2026 and beyond, and may cap automatic admissions at 75% of its freshman class. You still apply by each university's deadline and take the TSI Assessment unless you're exempt.
A statewide change is coming
A 2025 Texas law (SB 1191) asks the Commissioner of Education to set one way of calculating high school GPA for all Texas public schools. Prosper ISD's guide says its GPA rules may change because of it. The Texas Education Agency's proposed rule would start with students who enter 7th grade in 2027-28 or later, and a class's rules stay the same until it graduates. Check with your counselor for updates.
